a nice spot
i thought this place was great, its bright and cheery and i didnt have a long wait at all. that said, the portions are not very large (2 meatballs in a kofta order!) so i think the value is a bit lacking considering how much you pay. but the food is delicious!

Afghan Review
I'm an Afghan and I have been to Helmand twice. To begin with the restaurant has a nice layout. The indoor bakery makes it very nice and traditional. I get a feeling of being in a restaurant back home when I am at Helmand. I agree with some of the comments regarding the service. I actually had to wait for a long time for the check as well. For a busy restaurant the space is very limited. The food is nice, however it's not always seasoned with traditional Afghan spices.

Good (but not great) Afghani food
I went the the Helmand with a large group of friends on a Friday night. Overall the food and the presentation were quite good. I thought nearly all of the dishes we ordered were well seasoned, but the main dish portions were fairly small (so I would recommend the pumpkin appetizer to quell those with large appetites). Unfortunately, the restaurant was too busy and our waitress rarely visited our table to refill glasses and order dessert. Especially bothersome was that we waited nearly 20 minutes after receiving the check before we could leave. I would recommend this restaurant to those who like Middle Eastern cuisine and don't mind eating at earlier or later hours to avoid the weekend dinner crowds.

Delicious!
Right now, I am waiting for them to open so that I can make a reservation. It is my favorite place to take people who are visiting from our overseas office. The food is delicious and the place is so pretty. Even when they are busy, they don't rush you out of there. I find it a delicious and relaxing place to eat. The bread (fresh out of the oven) is wonderful. But most of all, try the eggplant appetizer... it is sublime!

Amazing experience
We love the Helmand! When you walk in you are in a beautiful restaurant where you expect the prices to be high. They are not. The dishes are perfectly cooked and very flavorful. We especially love the bread and the dipping sauces. We have gone there for special occasions and when I am there I say "We need to come back more often, not just on special occasions!" Make a reservation as they are ALWAYS busy. Request a seat in the front room.

Excellent Afghani Food
Great bread cooked in stone oven in the dining area.
