Cool Cafe With Heart&Soul, & Great Food!
We just discovered this fantastic new cafe in Dudley Square in Roxbury called Haley House Bakery Cafe. They were Best of the New in the Boston Globe in 2006 and it's easy to see why! We went for lunch on a Saturday and the whole place was warm and friendly, with funky art on the walls and small tables buzzing with locals looking very comfortable and at home. We came especially because we have always been fans of chef Didi Emmons since back when she was at Veggie Planet in Harvard Square, making those killer "Lunch for Henry" pizzas. Today, we got the jerk chicken grilled cheese which was awesome and the roast chicken sandwich with a delicious apple chutney. They also have hot plates with sides like mac&cheese and grits which I will try next time. We sat and hung out for a while just checking out the people coming in and out, and eventually I just couldn't resist the enormous chocolate cake sitting on the counter. It was the creation of one of the bakers in the nonprofit bakery school that the Cafe helps fund, and it was just heaven. The icing tasted like dulce de leche, wow it was rich. The Cafe is one of the arms of the Haley House shelter, and so it is a nonprofit. What we love about the place is that it combines great food with community and a purpose. For the food alone, it is worth going - we can't wait for Didi to introduce weekend brunch.
