Centre Street Cafe

I really wanted to love this restaurant but was very disappointed. The meatball appetizer was oversalted -- and I like a lot of salt. The pasta on the linguini with clams had an odd texture and the sauce had an bitter flavor that didn't belong. On the positive side, the clams themselves were fresh, briney and delicious, the homemade bread was perfect and our server was excellent. Other pet peeves for a restaurant of this price: the hard benches are uncomfortable and water was served was room temperature -- it should have been iced. Given how fabulous Tres Gatos is, I had expected far better.

Some things that should have stayed the same...like Brunch...have been changed beyond recognition. Other items are just too expensive for what you get. Salads the size of 3 dandelions, main courses the size of a decent bowl of soup. Desserts are tasty. Lots of work to do. Hint, one of the biggest draws at Brunch was the piles of fresh fruit on yummy waffles.

Whether for a casual dinner or Sunday morning brunch, Centre Street Cafe is a perfect neighborhood restaurant. The atmosphere is comfortable yet professional; the restaurant's philosophy is to treat its customers to a comfortable yet satisfying meal filled with fresh ingredients and delicious combined tastes. The menu has remained virtually the same since I began going to the restaurant over five years ago, but I have come to enjoy this restaurant for its consistency. I come hungry for "my dish"--the Donno's Szechwuan Shaboom--which never fails a hungry yet discerning stomach. With a familiar wait staff equipped with friendliness and diligence, the Centre Street Cafe is sure to remain a popular neighborhood joint for those who wish to eat well in J.P.
