the food was cold, the wait was long...

i used to live in dc where the ethiopian food was amazing, so i have pretty high standards, and other than ambience this place was a dissapointment. the portions were small, the service was slow, when we finally got food it was cold. it took complaining to a manger to actually get hot food, but by that time we were all hungry and cranky, and the injera tasted uncooked and wasnt brown, but white. all in all, i wont be back.

    I only get the lentils

I used to go to the Addis in the So. End. Not very good, but they don't have much competition. Very excited when one opened in Cambridge, near my work. Ordered Atakilt, which is vegetables. The potatoes were only partially cooked! They also don't use teff, which means I can't take my mother or boyfriend, both of whom have celiac disease, to this restaurant. But then again why would I if people seem to agree that the food is mediocre? I have tried them again, and had success with a lentil dish. I only do take out, so can't comment on the in-house service.

Not great, but the only game in town

I love Ethiopian, but the food at Addis is just average. The kicker is that they admit right on the menu that the bread isn't made from Teff, it's wheat or barley. It's pretty bland, and it also soaks up liquid so much that the layer under the food falls apart and can't really be picked up without making a mess - and that's usually the best part! It's not like there are so many other places to choose from...but I'll have to try them

Why do people like this place?

I am convinced that Addis Red Sea has clout because Bostonians are fascinated by the "exotic." I went to Addis with three friends, and between us had an appetizer, the fish, chicken, and lamb (the Ye-Awaze Dabo, Doro-Wot, Yebeg-Wot, and yasa-wot). My chicken was bland bland bland, with huge chunks of gristle thrown in for a lovely surprise when i bit down. The fish was the same kind one would find at their local fast-food place, chunks of deep-fried generic white fish with no seasoning. I didn't have the lamb, but my friend was not impressed. All were served on Addis' pancake, which tastes like a regular pancake, but spongier. Not to mention we waited 2 hours to be seated, during which the maitre'd repeatedly told us "10 minutes." Eventually we just left and went to starbucks to wait. At which point of course, our table at Addis was suddenly ready. We came back, and waited another 30 minutes before we were seated. I got over having to eat with my hands and share food with others also using their hands, but having to sit on Addis' tiny stools was no fun at all. The only enjoyable aspect of our meal was the honey-wine, which was really great. The tall and short is, the food here is not so good, the wait is ridiculous, and this place is all-hype.

    Great

I really enjoyed my meal here. Slow service, but that is done on purpose. I highly recomend this spot for a fun and different dinner.

    Awesome!

Went here for a date and had a fabulous time! The atmosphere was terrific, and had no wait on a Saturday night. Service was very friendly and helpful. And the food was delicious. All of this combined with the novelty of eating authentic Ethiopian food made this place worth the trip and deserving of many return trips in the future.

    Awesome food

Absolutely awesome place. The atomsphere is excellent, but it is different than a usual restaurant. That's what makes it great. It's very interactive and a great way to socialize while eating an excellent and interesting meal
